Indications of Morton’s Neuroma
The pain from the foot condition that is known as Morton’s neuroma is generally felt between the third and fourth toes. It affects the nerve in this area and can happen from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room in the toe area. High heels fall into this category, and Morton’s neuroma may develop when they are frequently worn. A neuroma occurs when the nerve becomes pressed or irritated, and if left untreated, it may begin to swell and enlarge. Common symptoms that are experienced can consist of pain, burning, or a numbing sensation. Some people describe the feeling as having a pebble or marble in their shoe, and the discomfort may increase if tightly laced shoes are worn. Relief may be found when shoes are worn that have enough room in the toe area to move freely in, and the affected foot is elevated. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat Morton’s neuroma.

What Is a Tarsal Tunnel?
The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space that runs behind and below the medial malleolus or the largest of the three bones that form the ankle. The tarsal tunnel contains important tendons, nerves, and blood vessels that help provide movement and flexibility in the foot. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is also known as tibial nerve dysfunction or posterior tibial nerve neuralgia. It is a type of neuropathy that is associated with the compression of nerves in the tarsal tunnel. It is like the more well-known and common condition that affects the wrists called carpal tunnel syndrome. Tarsal tunnel syndrome can result from flat feet, a sprained ankle, or underlying conditions, such as arthritis or diabetes. It can cause pain, tingling, or numbness in the foot. If you suffer from foot pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist at your earliest convenience to obtain a correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.
Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
- Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
- At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.
The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
- The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
- If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.
A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Keys to Preventing Falls on Balconies
It is well-known that senior citizens can struggle with maintaining the health of their feet. There are many different reasons for this. However, as a result of diminished foot health, seniors might become more likely to suffer a fall or tumble. One place in which a senior might fall is on a balcony in the home or even near Juliette balconies. Obviously a senior might be able to combat this possibility of falling on a balcony by strengthening the muscles in their feet to make them more resilient and stable. Another way to help prevent falls on balconies might even include ensuring that there are adequate railings and guards installed on or near the balcony. Providing proper edge protection might go a long way in preventing falls among seniors. If you are a senior citizen that has a balcony in their home and you are concerned about the health of your feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.
Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Philip C. Caswell, DPM from Family Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.
Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.
How to Prevent Falls
Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:
- Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
- Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
- Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
- Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
- Utilizing a walker or cane
- Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
- Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness
Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Flip Flops Lack Arch Support
The popular shoes that are known as flip flops date back to 1500 B.C. They have the same Y-shaped construction, and today they are available in a variety of colors and styles. Despite the ease of wearing these types of shoes, they can be the source of foot pain. Most flip flops lack good arch support and may cause the feet to flatten as walking is done. Plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, may gradually develop as a result of this. The plantar fasciia is the band of tissue that connects the heels to the toes, and the condition is often painful. The entire foot may become fatigued from the toes gripping the front of the shoe to keep it on the foot. The stride may change as the heels touch the ground with more force while wearing flip flops, possibly causing the natural walking style to change. If you are interested in wearing these types of shoes, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can educate you on the pros and cons of wearing flip flops.
Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Philip C. Caswell, DPM from Family Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.
Flip-Flops and Feet
When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops. Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer. However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.
How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?
- Ankle problems
- Hip problems
- Lower back problems
- Pain in the balls of the feet
- Problems with foot arches
- Changes in the way you walk
Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?
Yes. Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections. Common injuries and ailments include:
- Sprained ankles
- Blisters
- Infections
- Cuts and Scrapes
I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?
When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet. These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.
